Camp dels Ninots

A subtropical fauna

Camp dels Ninots provides us with a unique image of what life was like 3.1 million years ago.

At the site, numerous skeletons of large vertebrates have been recovered, mainly whole and anatomically connected, corresponding to three species of herbivores. No carnivore skeleton has thus far been documented, despite the fact that they must have been present in this environment. The little diversity of species contrasts with the large number of examples recovered thus far. This site is highly likely to be the one that has the largest fossil record of recovered species. The site’s most abundant animal site is the bovine of the species Alephis tigneresi, followed by the tapir of the species Tapirus arvernensis and the rhinoceros of the species Stephanorhinus jeanvireti
