In the early 20th century, summer holiday homes began to be built in the south of the centre of Caldes, with a tree-lined boulevard as the hub. The boulevard, developed by the Barcelonan Bartolomé Recolons, became a place often frequented by Barcelonans who came to the locality to take the waters.
The houses that were built there had a notable Modernist and 19th century aesthetic influence, with distinctive decorative motifs such as moldings, spiral gables, pottery and ironwork. Good examples of houses are those of Mas i Ros, Motlló, Xalets d’en Vilar and Bell-Estar, and also the chalet of Antoni Mas and the Colonia Rodríguez.
The boulevard was extended with a new tree-lined section, developed by the owner of the neighbouring Can Rufí farmhouse. The construction model of this area had large isolated towers, of which Vil·la Rosario and la Torre de Can Sala were notable examples.
Other interesting Modernist houses of the townn centre: Quintana, Perxachs, Manegat, Pla i Deniel, casa del Poeta Matheu, Casa de les Punxes, Bonanova, Torre dels Ocells.
