Caldes en Temps de Guerres

Rambla Recolons (end) – Totem Pole

For some years, several private houses on rambla Recolons were also affected by the wars. Between 1936 and 1939, the Casa de Can Sala accommodated up to 93 child refugees from Cantabria.

Rambla Recolons was home to establishments that, given their size, served as different types of provisional refugee accommodation. Some of these were Colonia Rodríguez, Casa Bell-Estar or certain chalets that were directly rented. The latter, once the Second World War was over and under the protection of the Franco regime, were used to shelter several Nazi spies and their families, who were awaiting safe passage to Argentina facilitated by the Franco authorities. The Franco government obstructed the extradition of the agent Erwin Stubbs, who was on an Allies intelligence services list of most wanted war criminals.
